Giro d'Italia

The 107th edition of the Giro d'Italia will see Naples as the protagonist, with the Campi Flegrei and the beauties of Pompeii as its strong points. The stage in the city is confirmed for the third consecutive year and will take place on May 12, closing the first week of the race.

The stage on May 12 (Avezzano - Naples), the ninth of the Giro, covers 206 km. After reaching the Tyrrhenian Sea in Minturno, it will continue along the Domitian Coast to reach the Campi Flegrei, starting from Lago Patria and continuing through the Archaeological Park of Cuma, the sea terrace of Monte di Procida, the wonders of Bacoli and Pozzuoli, with their archaeological areas and the beauty of the landscape, to finally arrive, after passing Coroglio and Posillipo, on the splendid Lungomare of Naples, in via Caracciolo, where the final sprint will take place.

The other stage, the tenth, covers 141 km and is scheduled for May 14. It will start from the Archaeological Park of Pompeii - a UNESCO World Heritage site among the most visited in the world - to reach Poggiomarino, which hosts the Naturalistic Archaeological Park of Longola, the protohistoric village that emerged around 1, 300 BC on the banks of the Sarno River - discovered by chance in 2000 during the construction of a sewage treatment plant - whose inhabitants are considered the founders of ancient Pompeii. In just a few kilometers, the riders will cross a history spanning 1, 400 years, from the 14th century BC to the eruption of 79 AD, touching two sites linked by an indissoluble cause and effect relationship. From there, the caravan will continue to Palma Campania, the city of Carnival and Quadrilles, reaching Nola, the birthplace of Giordano Bruno and the Gigli, both UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, and then bidding farewell to the metropolitan area of Naples towards Sannio, leaving behind Cimitile and its Paleochristian Basilicas.

The organization has planned another start in Campania: after the arrival in Cusano Mutri, the Giro will resume on Wednesday, May 15 from Foiano di Val Fortore, in the province of Benevento, for a stage of 203 km that, passing through Termoli and the Costa dei Trabocchi, will reach the Adriatic Sea, crossing Molise, with the finish line in Francavilla al Mare.
